Out and about
Looking at the Proms guide this year, I noticed that some of the concerts that interested me most were out of town, which for me is outside the London area. So I checked out a Morton Feldman epic in the Glasshouse at Newcastle (28th July), then a set of three concerts at the Bristol Beacon (7th-9th Aug.). Featured works were ‘Music for 18 Musicians’ by Steve Reich (90 this year), ‘Kafka Fragments’ by György Kurtág (100 this year) as well as a rarely performed piece by Sofia Gubaidulina. Nice to explore less familiar cities alongside the music. Of course, the regional Proms are designed to reach audiences in parts of the country with less access to the London Proms, so maybe this kind of Proms tourism is counter-intuitive, but it was certainly much enjoyed!
