There was no Feldman Prom in London this year, on the 100th anniversary of his birth, but there was in Newcastle, so I went to the city for the first time in my life to hear Feldman’s ‘Crippled Symmetry’ for a trio of flute, piano and tuned percussion. The venue was the Glasshouse, a modern arts centre overlooking the Tyne and standing near the famous historical bridges that cross the river. In the venue, the lighting was dim and the proximity to the performers was such as you felt you were sharing the stage with them. And in a sense, we were, through the 90+ minutes of continuous performance, the focus was intense as we were transported into a new sense of time.
